Garbo's Grill (great burritos by the way) signed onto the project late in the game. We bounced ideas back and forth but nothing really clicked. Then out of nowhere, which is how these things usually happen, a strange image of a burrito cart being attacked by hungry elves popped in my brain.  I quickly sketched it out an sent it to Garbo's, they liked it, I liked. Good enough. The plan was to shoot the cart and owners chunking burritos in a master plate. Then I would shoot a couple of dozen different poses of the elf and composite them into...

Today I start running down my Happy Effin' Holiday photos and supplying a little behind the scenes info on how they were created. Before  I begin I would like to state that I have never had so much fun executing a project. Not often in your life do you get to kill Santa (in multiple ways no less). My previous post supplies the details of the project as a whole. In simple terms, we wanted to create a series of fucked up Christmas images. This being Key West I had no difficulties getting business sponsorships. First up is Phantom Press owned...

My new solo photography exhibit opens today. Below is the official press release. I will deconstructing each photo over the next month leading up to Christmas.  And don't forget to check out MarreroStudio on Facebook. Enjoy! Forget the patter of reindeer paws this holiday season. Florida Keys photographer, Michael Marrero, tears open the shutters and throws up the sash with a twisted photo exhibit for a twisted season. Drunken Santa’s, angry elves and reindeer stew kick-off the holiday fare with more than 25 holiday scenes created by Marrero with well known Keys businesses that run the gamut from restaurants and brew pubs...

What do you want to be when you grow up? If you could do one thing, what would it be? I asked these questions of 35 Key West residents with intellectual and physical disabilities. Over the next 12 months the MARC House residents stood before my camera and transformed into a fighter pilot, a fireman, a villain... even James Bond. The camera captured their moments, but the biggest transformations happened beyond the lens. The project with the MARC House (Monroe Association of Retarded Citizens) started in 2008 with a "day in the life" editorial style concept. Initial meetings with the residents led...

I was born and raised in Key West and are what locals refer to as a “Conch”. At one time we were the richest city in the nation, at another time the poorest. I was lucky enough to bare witness to what many consider the last breath of this island’s soul before it was overrun by cruise ship tourists wearing “I Love to Fart” t-shirts. It was a time of smugglers, rooster fights, and Shrimp Boat Row throw downs. If you were inclined to wander the street of our island today you would probably say this way of life has passed....
